It’s all one can do.

bahhhhh.

Honestly, I’m just hoping to see some Zuko. Or maybe some Toph. Even more Katara would be nice.

…it WAS hinted at that Toph may be alive last week, yeah?…. or wishful thinking…

Mama bear Tenzin to the rescue!

I’ve been thinking about this for a while but I don’t think I’ve actually blogged about this yet, and it’s something I love about Avatar’s universe.

Even though the characters have magic, this isn’t some RPG/Fantasy world where they can take a bunch of blows and keep on ticking. You get hit hard once, you’re knocked out, like in real life. In probending they wore special gear and had RULES in place, so it made sense that characters could take a few blows before going down, like in real sports.

But in crazy action scenes like this, it’s refreshing to see the characters realistically get knocked out in a single hard strike, which actually adds a lot of tension. It takes me back to the Combustion Man fights in TLA because you KNEW if any of those characters got caught in one of his blasts, it’d do some serious damage. And, uh…well it DID, seemingly, when he blew himself up. O_O (speaking of, that’s why he had missing limbs to begin with)

Likewise, scenes like the Dai Li capturing the Gaang with their rock-handcuffs, or the Day of Black Sun, or Sozin’s Comet, characters got hurt, and a single injury crippled them. Aang gets shot with lighting in his back, poor guy is out of commission for weeks. Toph gets her feet burned with a single flash of fire, she’s helpless. Jet gets hit with a single, hard strike, his head hits the ground ground, he dies. None of this anime HUHUHUHUHUHUHUHUHN punchy punch bullshit.

This scene from Korra in particular really showed how the characters from this universe are very vulnerable like we are, and Tenzin doing this quick, seemingly subtle thing for Korra probably saved her life, or at least prevented a serious injury. These characters get shocked with electricity, they’re out cold. They get tossed through the air and smack the ground? KO. The same stuff happened in the first series but it was largely toned down a bit, so it’s cool to see a bit more intense action here.

I love this series (ATLA & LoK both).

couldn’t agree more.
