I’ve been reflecting lately on why so many people favor Damon over Stefan or pretty much any other character on the show. Looking back on what happened with me when I first watched Vampire Diaries, not knowing anything about the story, I am pretty convinced that it was…

The only thing I can think of to argue against this is Stefan’ s character development with Klaus. Finding out that he was in fact a friend to Klaus briefly, and seeing his old apartment with all the names of his kills, and how Lexi helped him get away from being a ripper. These moments are special insights into his past and do develop his character in an interesting way.
However, they DO go along with your argument because they were necessary for the movement of the plot.. not random. Unlike the Damon moments you’re talking about, which are not necessary for plot advancement, as you said, and work only to create sympathy for Damon therefore.
I’m a DE shipper all the way. But I can’t agree that Stefan is a flat character.
But still, this post is awesome!

I think that despite the fact that Elena will be remembering she met Damon first, and also realizing that their love/relationship would in fact “consume her”… And even though technically its Stefan’s fault she died, and therefore turned, I think she’s still gonna pick him over Damon, and forgive him for everything. She is gonna try to make a relationship with Stefan work as long as she possibly can, because she’s safe, and in complete denial.

And this makes me sad. Because Damon deserves her. After being so very alone at his almost death, and having her hurt him so many times, and after proving that he can be a good guy and Stefan has bad.. he deserves to be chased after and loved passionately. He deserves to win.

Sure, Stefan gives Elena free will. But look at those consequences. I’m not saying she shouldn’t be able to make choices, I just mean that sometimes, in order to save the one you love, in the end you have to do something they may not like. And that’s where Stefan is ignorant. Because Damon will always prioriyize Elena’s life over everything else. Even if it means she’ll most likely hate him for it, it doesn’t matter. Stefan on th other hand is more selfish, and wants to stay in her good graces rather than keep her human.

Ultimately, because he didn’t save her, she became a vampire; the last thing in the world she wanted. And their relationship will suffer. So Damon, and all us Delena shippers out there, will have to wait.

But it WILL happen.
